PALMETTO ST. AUGUSTINE
Palmetto St. Augustine is the most sold patented turfgrass in the world with more than 1 Billion square feet sold. Selected for better color and finer texture. Palmetto demonstrates superior shade, cold, frost, heat and drought tolerance. This versatile turfgrass is used across the southern United States from the Carolinas to California under a wide range of climate and soil conditions making it the ideal choice for residential and commercial use. Palmetto St. Augustine is making quite a name for itself in the Atlanta area. The Atlanta market sold out of St. Augustine in early 2015 but fresh supplies should be available by summer of 2016.
Light Requirements: Palmetto St. Augustine has very good shade tolerance. St. Augustine can tolerate as little as 3 hours of sun per day. This Turfgrass choice offers a better shade tolerance than zoysia but incurs an increase risk of winter injury in the Atlanta market.
Irrigation: Not as drought tolerant as Zoysia, to maintain a healthy appearance during the hottest months of summer, St. Augustine needs about 1.5 to 2 inches of water a week. On sandy soils it often requires more frequent watering, for example, 3/4 inch of water every third day. A light green-grey color and narrowing of leaves indicate that it is time to water.
Hot Weather Tolerance : Excellent
Sun Requirement : 3 - 4 hours (Excellent)
Wear Resistance : Good
Injury Recovery : Good
Winter Color : Dormant
Mowing Height : 3" - 4"
